Election Day

Here is a pretty red flower for election day. I work at the election office on election day only. I answer questions about voter eligibility. The polls are open for 12 hours and we have to be there 1 1/2 hours before they open and tonight I worked for four hours after they closed. I am tired from working more than 16 hours, but didn't want to miss another day of blogging this month.

Hi K,

Did you have to turn people away? What are reasons for doing that? Does FL require ID?

J, We tried our best to make sure that every voter got the chance to vote. The only people who were turned away were people who don't understand the law. People who registered to vote late (less than 29 days before the election) could not vote. People who were not registered at all couldn't vote. Florida does require a photo ID. Most people have a driver's licence, but if they don't drive they can get a photo ID that works the same as the driver's licence for voting. People are required to vote at their proper precinct. In our county we use paper ballots that are fed through an optical scanner. They work great! No touch screens here. Florida just went to a statewide voting databank. Anyone who moves in the state can vote with just an address change. They used to have to re-register in their new county. That makes it a lot easier. We had a lot of people yesterday who had moved. Unfortunately most people wait until a busy election to take care of address changes.
